Often a film provides a message of a character through various film techniques.

This is true in the film “In The Name of the Father”. This story is primarily about a young man who is busted for a criminal offenses he would not commit and how a marriage between dad and boy deepens through the entire tragedy. The main character, Gerry Conlon, will be portrayed towards the viewer as an unmanageable rebel yet is afterwards developed into an even more docile and compliant personality.

The director, Jim Sheridon, uses film techniques such as costume design and style, dialogue and extended metaphors to convey the introduction of Gerry as being a character. first paragraph: -1st time we come across gerry, scruffy, uncut -costume design – baggy denims, long hair, dirty presence -gives proven fact that gerry doesn’t care about his appearance or what people consider him -as film moves along he sharpens up physical appearance -combed taken back hair 2nd: -change also demonstrated through dialogue -lawyer demands him in the event that he is scared of the courtroom: -he responds “i simply don’t wish to be humiliated again” -this brief piece of conversation shows that he has now changed and does care what other folks think of him -helps viewers understand how needy an innocent man could be in the fight for justice 3 rd: -use of extended metaphor -viewer views lawyer gareth pierce generating through a long tunnel when listening to gerrys story -this could be viewed as an extended metaphor for the long darker road gerry has gone straight down while fighting the legal system -as the story pulls to a bottom line she gets to the end of the tunnel, or maybe the ‘light by the end of the tunnel’ -could refer to the point inside the story in which gerry and the others are finally arranged free.
