“Eveline is a short story by Wayne Joyce. Eveline is 19 and standing by a crossroads in her life. She has an individual choice for making as your woman stands and reflects on the ship dock. The choice she must make is whether the girl should go with Frank, her secret soon-to-be husband or stay with her father in the only place she has ever known. “Frank was very kind, manly, available, hearted,  (Joyce 45) and offers Eveline a “new home, within a distant unknown country (Joyce 44) in Buenos Ayres.

Her dad is ageing, grumpy, and frequently threatens physical violence is she does not do what he says. Eveline thinks about what her duty in fact is.

There are many good reasons intended for Eveline to leave with Frank and get married. “Her brothers and sisters were most grown up, (Joyce 42) and her mother was dead. Her child years friends, Tizzie Dun was dead and the Waters got moved returning to England. She is required to spend her days doing work in a store earning money she need to turn over to her father.

She spends her nights taking care of your house, her father, and two young children.

This is not exactly the existence she has read about in romantic endeavors novels or daydreamed regarding in grade school. It is hard function and with the knowledge that “Everything changes (Joyce 43) she would like to “go aside like the others, to leave her home.  (Joyce 43). The girl knowsin the event she keeps, she will stagnate. She will still be inhaling and exhaling but she’ll be as dead as her mother if she chooses to settle. Honest offers her a life of fresh adventures and love. When the girl with married she’ll have value and Honest will not be violent with Eveline as her father was with her mother.

As Eveline “tried to weigh either side of the question (Joyce 43) she begins to develop a set of reasons why the girl must stay. This is actually the only house Eveline as has at any time known. It is full of”familiar objects which in turn she had dusted once weekly for so many years (Joyce 43). And magic if she could ever see these items again.

Here, with her father, she gets food and shelter, as well as the comfort of the known. She also worries that the people she knows in town will consider her “fool (Joyce 43) when they realize the lady had run away with a fellow (Joyce 43). Her father is definitely old and forgetful, and she worries if they can take care of him self. The overwhelming good reason that she feels it can be her responsibility to stay as a result of “her guarantee to keep the home together given that she may.  (Joyce 47) with her mother just before she perished.

Eveline’s relationship with Frank relies solely about hope. Frank can be described as sailor who will be kind but tells her “tales of distant countries. He had started out as a deck boy at a pound a month on a ship with the Allan Collection going out to Canada(Joyce 46). And her dad warns “I know these types of sailor chaps (Joyce 46).

Is Frank being truthful or is he a typical sailor with a young lady in every dock. The lady hopes that he is telling her the reality because this lady has no different evidence that he is. Frank symbolizes escape. When your woman reflects on her promise with her dying mother and her subsequent fatality she feels to their self “Escape! The lady must get away! Frank could save her. He would give her existence, perhaps take pleasure in, too But she wished to live. So why should she end up being unhappy? The lady had a right to happiness. Honest would have her in his arms, fold her in his arms. He’d save her. (Joyce 47).

The question remains to get Eveline, is going to she select Frank or stay at home. Of course in the long run she makes a decision to stay. She selects the known over unknown excitement. The comfort of steadiness and a familiar environment much outweighs her desire for a fresh life, in a new residence with new people. In the long run she decides “hard function ” a hard life ” but now that she was about to let it stay she would not find it a completely undesirable lifestyle.  (Joyce 45). “Eveline is actually a story about choice and learning to experience the consequences of these choice.
