The rebellion began on Feb, 23rd, 1763 on Plantation Magdalenenberg on the Canje Riv. The slaves rebelled, protesting harsh and inhumane treatment, and required control of the location. By Drive, the mutiny spread to the Berbice Lake. As plantation after plantation fell for the slaves, the European populace fled. In Apr, 1963, Cuffy sent a letter to Governor Vehicle Hoogenheim with regards to the division of Berbice. Van Hoogenheimn obtained rearrangements from Gravesande, Governor of Essequibo, a neighbouring Dutch colony.

On May 13th, 1763, Cuffy assaulted Dageraad unsuccessfully. Eight whites and fighty-eight blacks were killed.

Cuffy, was an African-born servant from the Tetao tribe and lived in the former Dutch nest of Berbice in present-day Guyana. In 1763 led a mutiny of more than two, 500 slaves. They held most of Berbice for 10 months, yet tribal, status and management divisions among the black rebels (particularly noticed when Akara deserted Cuffy for the extremist command of Atta) and problems by Dutch forces, led to the break of the rebellion. Therefore , feeling unwanted and defeated, Cuffy killed his close followers and committed suicide soon after.

In December, 1763, black rebels were bitten by light forces over the Berbice Water and by Upper Demerara. Most of the slaves ran aside into the jungles and the rest were sought after down and killed.

Towards the end with the Berbice Servant Uprising Cuffy disagreed strongly with Akara, one of the market leaders of the rebellion. Akara was demoted and made to operate the team. Akara later joined Atta against Cuffy. Later even now, he cooperated with the Dutch, taking part in the successful attack on Accabre which finished the rebellion.

The anniversary of the Cuffy slave rebellion, February 3, has been Republic Day in Guyana seeing that 1970.

Effects

During the a few months of 03 and 04 1764, punishments were meted out to the black rebels: (i) 40 (40) were hanged; (ii) twenty-four (24) were cracked and 24 (24) were burned.
