Psychosocial Development Essay
Psychological development can be described as terminology that was used by Erik Erikson in explanation of internal development in relation to the human social environment. Generally, the theory can be described as personality theory that attempts to examine the actual traits that are synonymous with the various stages of internal development of individuals. Erick Erikson identified 8 stages of psychosocial expansion but I will be focusing on the sixth level which this individual called the stage of Intimacy vs . Isolation. This individual argued that this stage occurs between ages 19 and 40 which in turn fall under the first adulthood of human beings.
According to Erikson, this level is seen as exploration of personal relationships (Wagner, 2006). This kind of stage consists of the individual facing the task of developing emotional and personal relationship with others around him. Nevertheless , Erickson taken care of that this turns into impossible if the individual have not carved a great identity for himself/herself (Carver & Scheir, 2000). At this time, there is a have to build romantic relationships that will affect the course of the individual’s life.
However , Erikson identified that each level is troubled by the previous level so the moment individuals are not able to build a sense of personality for themselves, they may be forced to enter into isolation (Stevens, 1983). Via my viewpoint, we have cause to believe several aspects of Erik Eriksson’s watch. This is because We fall under this kind of age bracket and I can identify with some of the things that Erikson highlighted from this theory.
This stage is the stage when folks get married and the most people divorce. This is also enough time when people decide on who they would like to be and what they want to do with their lives. I believe that Erikson’s approach to the whole may not be totally the case but they definitely help us as it determines some basic issues that characterize each stage of advancement.
In conclusion, Erikson’s theory has been criticized by simply some students. One of the things that may be leveled against his theory is that it really is expensive to conduct such a research (Cole & Cole, 1989).
