Cheryl Albury in the book” Points of views from Internal Windows, ” reveals lots of the social issues that we encounter in Bahamian society.
In her stories “Waiting for Love” and “Pot of Gold” she uses those to reflect on some of the characteristics of Bahamian Guys. From both of these stories Albury portrays males as sneaky and selfish. In “Waiting for love” we are introduced to the relationship of Stafford and Phyllis a couple by Exuma. Stafford, evil in the ways, preys on naïve Phyllis, coaxing her brain of dreams he had on their behalf.
He courted her around town and located an opportunity to take advantage of her of her innocence. Although the lady loved him, she knew something wasn’t right about their relationship, because ever since he previously asked her to elope she believed a “sense of vexation and uneasiness” to the subject. He robbed her in believing they will elope and start a family, simply by him not doing this he betrayed her trust and left her waiting in love. In “Pot of Gold” best friends Cyril and Jacob are family guys with lowest paying careers.
They, influenced by the hard times, robbed the local hardware store of a large sum of cash and strolled free. It absolutely was not till Cyril’s unknowingly told his girlfriend that they were located guilty. Due to their selfish methods it induced them to endanger their human relationships with their family and to deceive the trust of their spouses. After staying imprisoned, John tried to restore their prize but a building was constructed onto it, but in the finish they learned that true happiness will not come from staying selfish.
To conclude, Albury in these stories uses the technique of vernacular and images to help her readers understand her point more. As well I believe that Albury shows a true expression of Bahamian men. She uses real world situations to bring her point across that most Bahamian men are selfish and manipulative.
