Based upon the novel, Jim Burden’s observation of Antonia and even the way he looks at her and treats her, it appears clear that he liked Antonia. He did not follow her, however.

Jim put in his childhood in his grandfather’s house inside the prairie and spent time and effort with Antonia. Eventually, inside the second book, he spends more time with Antonia and in addition with the women working in city. It is currently that he notices the sexuality of Antonia. Therefore, his explanations of Antonia, and later of Lena, turn into charged with sexuality. Rick Burden’s romantic relationship with Antonia remained platonic first, because Antonia place emphasis on the four years difference that they had and seemed down for Jim because her junior.

Hence, Rick felt that Antonia seemed down on him as a child. When he turned his attention to Ardore Lingard, the lady decided to gadget with the small man’s emotions. Antonia was required to intervene to prevent Jim from being heartbroken. The relationship between Antonia and Jim remained platonic, at least on the surface. Jim did not look out of the defenses set up by simply Antonia in order to avoid their being linked romantically together.

Nevertheless since Rick turned his attention to Lena, Antonia felt that the lady should safeguard the thoughts of Rick. Jim and Antonia are connected with the threads of childhood along with the camaraderie of growing up collectively. But Rick, being an orphan and a person, has to research and pursue his dreams for him self. His education and the extremely act of pursuing his dreams wait in the way between him and Antonia.

Years later when he goes back and finds Antonia with her husband and her ten children, this individual feels tender to these people yet this individual adds a wistful longing by saying Antonia and he “possessed together the precious, the incommunicable earlier. ” In the end, that was what they shared together.
