Dr . Henry Jekyll was born in to a society of morality, respectability and faith.

It was believed that ‘progress’ could only be made if everyone was self-disciplined and moralistic. Authors just like Samuel Laughs wrote “Self-Help” guides. All this was aimed to help the rich get wealthier and the poor get lesser. In an age of stern, diligent hypocrites, admiration was everything to the upper and middle classes. People refused themselves alcoholic beverages, gambling and prostitution to gain the esteem of others.

Jekyll refers to these denied as “pleasures”. Persons lived without these “pleasures” but soon began to wonder what they were missing. This brought about the “slum adventurers”.

Just read was middle and upper class men who desired to keep the value of their world but , through anonymity, continue to indulge in the “pleasures” the indegent slums made known. They would work by working day in their offices and at night would trip down to the alleys with the slums. A person just like Mr Utterson, a Birmingham lawyer who does not would like to indulge in pleasures is of a vicarious mother nature. It is realized that “…though this individual enjoyed even now, [he] hadn’t crossed the doors of one in twenty years”.

It is this vicariousness in order to him fix the case of Dr . Jekyll and Mister Hyde. Utterson is the opposing of Jekyll in the way that Utterson retains the respectability of the Even victorian society, while Jekyll ‘rebels’. The edgy nature of Jekyll prospects him to learn how to convert his physical appearance. Dr . Lanyon, a respectable standard doctor of Victorian world frowns on Jekyll typically secret work, which this individual refers to as “unscientific balderdash”. Initially it is difficult for all of us to experience sympathy for Dr . Jekyll: he is operating by his own mind.

At this current stage, he can in no way dependent on Mr. Hyde. Even the look of Mr.

Hyde “… pale and dwarfish… who gave the impression of deformity but with no nameable malformation”, relating to Mister. Utterson, who also “…had considered a odium to my gentleman at first sight”, really should have forced Jekyll to recognise that Hyde was evil. It is extremely difficult to experience sympathy to get Jekyll after we are informed about once Hyde “…trampled calmly over…” a young girl’s body. Normally after this event anyone else may have ceased his transformation in to Hyde.

Yet Jekyll starts to become dependent on taking the medicines (as with modern addictions) and continually turn into Hyde even after trampling the lady. As if trampling the girl had not been a big enough deterrent Hyde brutally murders Sir Danvers Carew. Jekyll, knowing what experienced happened, conveniently accepts this and adjustments the blame to Hyde. He shows this kind of in Dr Jekyll’s total statement of the case, “it was Hyde, in the end, and Hyde alone that may be guilty”.

The ease from which he welcomes this and shifts the blame could almost be inhuman. But following he discovers that he begins to change into Hyde spontaneously, without the drug we see he could be very do it yourself centred and selfish, “I must have looked upon that half a minute…I rushed for the mirror… my own blood was something exquisitely thin and icy”. Though Jekyll is selfish relating to this, not talking about what a bad thing that he made at this point controls. We could feel a few sympathy intended for knowing that he can trapped including anytime Hyde might come out over which Jekyll has no control.

Alternatively we are able to have sympathy for a person that failed to have foreseen what happens and stopped the process as quickly as possible. But this individual continued to fulfill his requirement for the “pleasures” which in any other case eluded him. It is also very hard to feel sorry for someone who have knows and remembers what goes on, but will not take action to prevent it. “My two naturel had memory space in common”. Surely the memories in the girl and Carew must be painful enough to push any rational and humane person to put a stop to Hyde’s actions.

Hyde adopts hiding following Carew’s murder in fear of being put up, should he be trapped. This gets rid of a lot of the sympathy we may normally feel to Jekyll now, as yet again he shows signs of being selfish and putting him self before everybody else. Some of this sympathy is definitely regained when he is in hiding, he starts to show authentic remorse pertaining to Carew’s death. In the statement of the case, Jekyll finally admits to Hyde’s evil simply by saying “…It was no for a longer time the fear from the gallows, it was the apprehension of being Hyde that racked me. ” This shows that Jekyll has become altruistic. Jekyll has now begun to put him self after everybody.

He at this point excepts the he must not really let Hyde free again for anxiety about him committing more wicked. It is now we all finally start to feel compassion and start to respect Jekyll for aiming to put a stop to Hyde. Finally Jekyll commits suicide to save the world from the fear and wicked Hyde may unleash. This gains him the greatest respect and compassion. He required his lifestyle to save other folks from the serious evil he had inadvertently made.

He finally takes best responsibility and puts a stop to Hyde. In conclusion I do think that Jekyll was a patient of Even victorian society exactly where respect was everything. In some parts it is difficult to offer our sympathy although his final act was one that one must esteem and offer compassion for the pain Jekyll went through. As we have seen restricting things by people can easily bring out unhealthy side of those, as Jekyll explains, “My devil had been long caged, he came out roaring”.

Personal freedom is definitely one of our greatest possessions and a single we take quite definitely for granted.
